How the clearance process works
The process begins with filing a Bill of Entry (imports) or Shipping Bill (exports), followed by assessment by customs authorities - either manual or via EDI. After duty payment and verification, goods are released.
Customs release can take anywhere from 20 minutes to several days depending on cargo type, documentation accuracy, and port congestion. Temporary rejects from data-entry mismatches can be corrected; permanent rejects for misdeclaration or under-valuation require re-filing.
